bombay jewels

I bought my first Ranjana Khan necklace on the weekend and since have been staring at my online bank account with furrowed brow trying to figure out how I can buy more of her beautiful pieces! I'll definately have to wait a year or two, but it's nice to have a something to look forward to :)
Check out her beautiful embroidery and craftsmanship.

who i'm rooting for

style inspiration: joan root. think crisp blouses, structured skirts, and secretary spectacles that can go with you on all your travels. throughout her life root made a huge impact on wildlife conservation and made some of the first wildlife documentaries, all while looking impeccably put-together.

i spy

still life photo inspiration by philip karlberg.

madame butterfly

this photoshoot from Elisabeth Toll for Maxi is right up my alley. I need a wall full of cleverly placed plates! Not only is this shoot full of fashion inspiration but I now have some serious redecorating to do at home.

the space and the things.

spring has sprung and the fun has just begun! it's been a busy few weeks for me, gearing up for a summer of creativity and relaxation. i'm happy to be moved into my studio space and almost finished all the cute-ification of the place. i'll be using the space to focus on different creative projects i've had in mind for a while. it's also time for me to get back into sewing and my goal is to design a few pieces by summers end. but mainly, it's another place for me to fill with lovely little things!

my friend Nick, in the studio, modeling my new hat and sunglasses. wish i looked that good in them.

which brings me to my topic of the day: things! so those of you who know me know that every space i inhabit becomes a showcase of the objects i've found over time. nothing makes me happier than being surrounded by cute (and for the most part, impractical) knick-knacks, books, and clothing. my most recent discoveries came from a beautiful sunday back in my hometown. my first stop was the local antique market where i snatched up some vintage sewing patterns, drawer pulls, bowls (to be added to my circus themed dishware set) and an amazing tiered shelf to display such things. days like this in the country make me realize that as much as I love being part of the city, the country is where i'm meant to spend my life. it's official.

one of my favourite booths at the antique market. i call it babies and mirrors, nice ring to it, no?

after the antique market i headed to my boyfriend's house where his mom was telling me about their spring basement and garage clean. she had uncovered things from her childhood and items from her family dating back into the early 1800s! she saw my face light up as she was talking about these things and showed me to the basement where it was like it's own little antique store! there were so many amazing things; a baby pram from the 1890s, her mother's silk wedding dress, and the most teacups and saucers i had ever seen in one place. seeing how i reacted to all her stuff, she immediatly got so excited with me and started showing me everything and remembering her past. she showed me a pile of seventeen magazine's from her summers at the cottage as a teenager (and even gave me her july 1961 issue!). i loved hearing all these stories and getting a first-hand look into my boyfriend's familys past. plus, i left with a big box of dishes, patterns, sewing notions, teacups, knick-knacks and that amazing seventeen magazine.

seventeen magazine, july 1961.

this is what i love so much about old things; their ability to retell someone's story and become part of your own life story. i love to think about the people who once owned this stuff and how they probably never expected anyone to be admiring the tiny pieces of their life so long after.

looking forward to a summer filled with more little objects and things,
whitney

mother of my life

had a lovely mother's day with the family. we enjoyed an amazing high tea at madeleines, complete with little white gloves, hats and scones (with the most amazing cherry jam and clotted cream, may i add!). it's hard to pack in all your mom appreciation in one day, but after reflecting more on it today I realize how much I owe to my mom. Not only does she support me in everything I do, but she is always encouraging me to stay true to myself and never pressures me to give up on my dreams and settle for a more practical or reasonable life. I'm very lucky to have someone in my life who will do anything for me and just wants me to succeed. So with that, hat's off to you mom!
