the universe and me

me and the universe have become great friends. she finds little ways to make my day and give me faith in the coincidences of signs and life. this morning as i was listening to a higher power (of course) i look down to my feet and see these two headlines.

Hillary Bird is an amazing illustrator I just tumbled upon. Her series of the girl and her bear are my favourite. I want my own bear to go on adventures with!

eloise

thought it was about time I started adding some of my Character of Fashion shots. Although i've been done with the project for a while, I put so much of my heart into them that it's time I post them here. The idea behind the book was the way the books one reads as a child go on to influence their personal sense of fashion. Specifically, the characters one relates to or admires ultimately shape who they become and can be seen referenced in their day-to-day style. For me, growing up in my dad's bookstore i would lose myself in these books and imagine myself as the various protagonists. I think it's these characters that contributed to my love of imaginative and quirky fashion.

To begin, my favourite. The girl who lives in the plaza and always find herself in some kind of mischief, Eloise.

i'm on my way to the usa (for reals)

it's happening! i'm going to see jens lekman! although originally i was seriously considering flying to LA, he added a show to nyc! i found out by an email he sent out, and my rabbits foot was in full force as the tickets went on sale an hour later and sold out in 7 minutes. i honestly can not wait. whoa mama.
not only is this a chance for me to visit my long-time friend Elliott who lives in nyc, but I get to see Jens in a small intimate show at 450 union, a small warehouse space with chandeliers! ah.

leaf it to me!

I stumbled upon a blogpost about artist Dave Rittinger and his new eco-friendly leaf shirts last night. As an avid leaf colletor (ha!), I've gotta say, these shirts make me pretty happy. I sort of love them and would thoroughly enjoy seeing a man wear one.

I then went to his website and found some other amazing wearable art pieces. Not sure if it is him in all the pictures, but if so...heya babe. Love this dress shirt with an optical illusion tie!

But my absolute favourite has got to be this "Man Handle" Suit Jacket. My god.

put a spell on you

after a magical encounter with my favourite lady Jenny Lewis I can't get the lyrics "i'm in love with illusions so saw me in half, i'm in love with tricks so pull another rabbit out your hat" out of my head.

I've also been loving this time of year and the spookiness that's coming with halloween. although i've always referenced black magic women and wicked witches in my style, i've begun turning to the thought of actual magic. my latest inspiration is the magician. think velvets, tuxedo tails, white oxford shoes, shiny accents, top hats, billowing blouses and men's trousers.

talk of magic was in full force last weekend. my friend Dianna and I met a magic little all-white cat named Domino, and couldn't help but imagine her having a life moonlighting as a magician's assistant. one day our little cat will be turned into a children's book called "Trixie the Magic Cat". These are the types of moments that I'll always remember. Good times with friends, making up little stories. It's these talks that inspire my style cues and set the tone for my fashion obsessions. Photoshoot (and children's book!) to come soon.

rowe, rowe, rowe your boat

I had the pleasure of assisting designer Ashley Rowe for the past month with the production of her SS11 show. The presentation was on Thursday and attracted lots of positive media and industry attention. Her line was filled with amazing tie-dyed pieces, which she accomplished using various dyeing techniques, the most interesting using a tennis ball. The experience was really great and reminded me how much i love working on shows and events. We were all in a bit of a panic the day before and morning of the show, for it wouldn't be a fashion event if a few things didn't go wrong last minute. The biggest challenge was probably the bathtub centrepiece that the models were set to walk and pose around. Originally filled with dyed water, we quickly realized that we were going to have a leak on our hands if we didn't empty it. Instead of the water, we filled it with tea light candles that really made the bath stand out and the highlighted the model's outfits perfectly. I loved all her ideas for the show's set, simple yet powerful and artistic. The space ended up working out beautifully and even had a great loading dock in the back for all the media to get some better-lit photos of the line. All in all it was a great success. Here are some photos of the event and her collection, courtesy of Jenna Wakani and Kevin Gonsalves.
